A Vision Of Battlements
- ISBN: NI027283
- Description:
This novel haas many claims on the attention of lovers of comic fiction. The setting is Gibralar, a place rarely visited by novelists: the theme is not the frustration of a wartime garrison so much as the pain of looking forward as to re-building. readjustment at war's end. But it is still gloriously comic. The hero is Richard Ennis, Seargeant and musician. He is a young man of admirable intentions who never seems quite to hit it off with authority, especially his C.O. Major Muir, and his Seargeant-Major, W.O.1.- Instructor Gregg. He lectures on Civics to the troops and in spite of himself, becomes a popular left wing hero. He carries on a liasion with a Gibratarian Widow when he should be on parade. He causes the death of a large and detestable P.T.Instructor, He seems to be the instigator of a troops mutiny. Finally he is accused by the Christian Brothers of trying to corrupt the young by giving them Godless Spanish Poetry. In spite of all this he remains an optimist, and he has a great capacity for love. Admirers of the authors work will see here not merely a Burgess hero but an anticipation of a good-hearted rebel of the fifties. This novel in fact, was Mr Bugess's first extended piece of fiction.
