Redemption, From Original Gangster To Nobel Prize Nominee: From Original Gangster To Nobel Prize Nominee - The Extraordinary Life Story Of Stanley Tookie Williams
- ISBN: 9781903854341
- Description:
As co-founder of deadly LA street gang, 'the Crips', Stanley 'Tookie' Williams was the most feared man on the streets of Los Angeles. For over twenty years, the Crips ran a reign of terror on the streets of LA through drug dealing, violence and shootings and their growth has been explosive. Today there are over 12,000 Crips members living in LA alone and the gang continues to spread as far afield as Canada, South Africa and Germany. In 1971, at the age of 17, Tookie Williams already had a fearsome reputation as a fighter and a 'general' of South Central's west side, an area torn apart by vicious gang wars, drugs and poverty. He teamed up with Raymond Lee Washington to protect their community against the deadly threat of the street gangs and they formed their own gang which would later become known as 'the Crips.' Vicious intercede feuding and power struggles soon plagued the gang and by 1979 the Crips had become just like the gang members they sought to protect themselves from as they terrorized their own communities and flooded the neighbourhoods with guns and crack cocaine. Soon, there would be Crips gangs all across the state of California as America entered one of the most violent and deadly periods in its gangland history. But since his conviction for the murders of four people in 1981 - charges he continues to refute - the Crips' co-founder now decries his own bloody legacy and his continued efforts to teach young people about the dangers of joining street gangs has earned him a Nobel peace prize nomination and a stay of execution on death row. This is his extraordinary story.
