Paragon Place
- ISBN: 0747235007
- Description:
Paragon Place, a drab square of two-up, two-down houses in Bermondsey, has pretty well survived the blitz. Even the old sycamore tree in the middle of the square has escaped unscathed but for a few shrapnel scars and a small crude heart carved on its trunk enclosing the inscription "BB loves SR." It is a close-knit and diverse community: Sally Brady has returned to live with her parents, Charlie and Annie Robinson, in her childhood home in the square - and is torn between Ben, the husband she loved and who betrayed her, and Jim, the man who can give her what she has always yearned for; Alf Porter, the local drunk, and his archenemies, the prim Carey sisters; Ginny Almond, courageously bringing up her five children alone, and the voluptuous Muriel Taylor, a 'lady of the night'; the local villains, the Dougan brothers, and the gossiping grannies, Lil Allen and Daisy Almond. All of these, and more, are drawn together, in laughter and in tears, in the never-ending fight against poverty, rationing and flying bombs.
