  • Description:
Natalya Galinova, prima ballerina with a fierce temper and a foul mouth, storms out of a ballet at the Metropolitan Opera House. Twenty-four hours later she is officially a missing person. Several hours after that, she is officially dead. Asst DA Alexandra Cooper finds the corpse. Natalya, it transpires, never left the Opera House. Her final curtain call took place behind the scenes with an audience of one - her killer. For Alex, the sudden immersion into the world of New York's theatrical elite is a welcome change from her ongoing investigations into a Turkish sex criminal and the Riverside Drive rapist. For Mike Chapman of the NYPD, returning to work after the tragic death of his girlfriend, the murder recalls an earlier scene. His first corpse - witnessed in childhood - was at the Met. The case exposed murky, private dealings behind a glorious public facade. Twenty-five years later, it looks like he, Alex and Detective Mercer Wallace are dealing with an even more sensational script ... They are. For behind Broadway there is now the legendary Berk clan, the most dysfunctional family to hit the boards since the Sopranos. Joe, the monster at the helm; Mona, the litigious niece; and the elusive son, Briggs. And behind them is a sinister cast of directors and agents - and a killer still on the loose. A killer familiar with theatrical superstition, well-versed in the business rivalries, personal fueds and sexual jealousies of the stage. A killer who is very keen that Alex takes her final bow very violently out of this particularl performance..

Review:
Linda Fairstein does not disappoint with her latest book. I was a bit wary at first because the setting was primarily supposed to be the Ballet. I know nothing about the Ballet, and it doesn't interest me that much. But I'm glad I took the plunge and invested in Death Dance. Yes, a lot of the story takes place amongst the setting of the Metropolitan Opera House, but Fairstain doesn't fall into the trap of showing off her own interest in the theatre by padding out the story with too much extraneous history on the subject of the ballet or theatre in general. However, what she does include is necessary to the story and if it isn't, it's fascinating stuff.

We get to meet her cohorts Mike Chapman and Wallace Mercer. You don't really need to have read any of Fairsteins previous books to enjoy this one, but I guarantee when you've read this, you'll want to go back and read the rest.

Top marks from me.
