- Title: Dragonsinger: Harper Of Pern
- Description:
When Menolly, daughter of Yanus Sea Holder, arrived at the Harper Craft Hall, she came in style, aboard a huge bronze dragon, and followed by her nine fire lizards. The Masterharper of Pern, aware of her unique skills, had chosen her as his only girl apprentice. But the holdless girl had first to overcome many heartaches in this strange new life. Two things sustained her - her devoted lizards, a subject on which she was fitted to instruct her Masters - and the music...music of compelling beauty, music-making where at last she was accepted. In the Great Hall, Menolly could fulfil her destiny. DRAGONSINGER: HARPER OF PERN is another spellbinding story in Anne McCaffrey's world-famous Chronicles of Pern.
- Title: Acorna's Quest
- Description:
This SF team's earlier novel Acorna introduced the alien girl Acorna, an orphan rescued and reared by space-faring humans. Though generally human-shaped, she shares some features with the unicorn of myth--notably, a forehead horn which can heal and purify. Now Acorna blasts off with human friends in search of her own race, who shortly turn up looking for her. These gentle, horned nonhumans are fleeing further aliens who are wanton murderers and torturers that resemble huge cockroaches. Meanwhile, a starship full of dispossessed human miners picks up a scientist whose devastating system of planetary weather control inspires some on-board criminals to stage a coup and use the weather machine to blackmail whole planets: Acorna stumbles into this conflict. Meanwhile, a spacefleet of killer roaches is on its way. These storylines mix romance, light comedy and some violent action which is generally downplayed or dealt with offstage. Of course the verminous villains find humanity a tougher proposition than nice unicorn-folk, and complain bitterly: "They are barbaric and vicious beyond belief; when attacked, they actually fight back!" Happy endings emerge, with room for more sequels. Overall, Acorna's Quest feels like a romping, uncomplicated SF adventure intended for younger readers--and Anne McCaffrey devotees. --David Langford

From the Back Cover When the Catteni ships descended on earth it was one of the most terrifying experiences humankind had ever known. Kris Bjornsen, along with thousands of others, found herself herded by forcewhips into the hold of giant spaceships to be transported to the slave compounds of an alien planet. And even then it wasn't over. For, after a partially successful escape attempt, Kris was once more shipped across space - to an apparently empty and untamed planet. The Catteni just dumped an assorted load of humans and aliens on the strange world and left them to see what would happen. Brilliantly the refugees began to organize themselves into a pattern of survival. The planet was eerie and not as empty as it seemed. For someone - something - had built giant storage barns - the planet was being used as a huge larder - for an entity they could not comprehend. As Kris and her patrol set out to explore the enigmatic world she had yet another problem to contend with - the presence of Zainal, the high-ranking patrician Catteni who had been abandoned with the rest of them. Zainal was strong, brilliant, and...kind, and Kris was puzzled by his presence, his personality, and above all by the tenuous tie she felt towards this man - who was not a man but one of the hated Catteni. For that is what they were - prisoners and dissidents from other worlds whom the hated Catteni had banished to an empty planet - or what they thought was an empty planet. Kris Bjornsen and her fellow slaves had survived very well - and one reason was that amongst their number was Zainal, a high-ranking Catteni who was as trapped on Botany as they were. Zainal knew the ways and technology of his people, and he had plans for fighting back. For, as he explained, the Catteni too were victims - subject to the mighty and terrifying Eosi race, who used them as a galactic police force - and also used them in more grisly and horrifying ways. And over Zainal's daring and secret plans hung a further mystery - to whom did Botany really belong? Who had created the giant grain sheds - the mammoth machinery that tilled the great fields? The new inhabitants of Botany called them the 'Farmers' - and waited for the day they would come to harvest their crops. And when that happened, the refugees were awed into silence - for the Farmers were greater than anything the universe had ever seen.
